Zagreb Artists' Lab - evaluation notes 10.12.2008

Just a few notes taken during our evaluation talks about the artists' lab format:

  • the labs should be an opportunity for new input for the participating artists;
  • labs should be a hybrid format - not deciding in advance where it is on the spectre between open lab and workshop as two extremes, but deciding based on people's initial input;
  • accessible working space is a must;
  • time-management (and a person designated for the task), not content moderation;
  • preparation by all participants in advance;
  • need to break-up repetitiveness and routine (introducing daily stimulating physical activity, sonic experience or cognitive challenge, working odd hours);
  • continuous evaluation of the process;
  • "show & tell" - getting to know each others' work.

Morning visit to the studio of Silvio Vujicic.

Afternoon discussion session at the Center for Drama Art office:

- what makes you decide to use a tool? especially a software tool for rehearsal work?
- process of semiotization of theatrical act depend on the audience subtracting some elements present; while with use of technology makes it hard to ignore (noise of projector, for example)
- generic/specific tool; custom tool
- reappropriation of available tools/gadgets
- overblown interface
- evident or visible technological intervention
- need to think of the operating algorithm of working technology
- what's the presence of technology even if it's removed from view
- accounted for as technology, transposition, content...
- apparatus
- dance-tech movement in the 1990's
